Monday, November 13th, 2006

Rebecca Alice Slocum was born to Edward and Renewed Hazard Slocum on January 16, 1844 in Rhode Island. Rebecca came to Vancouver when she was 24 years old with her uncle William C. Hazard. She married Charles Brown right here in the Brown house in 1874. The couple would go on to have three daughters, Floy, Frances and Harriet. Rebecca passed away in the early hours of October 17, 1910 due to heart failure and her obituary below appeared in the Columbian later that day.

These are pictures that pertain to Rebecca Brown’s family. Rebecca’s maiden name was Slocum. Slocum was a well known name in early Vancouver during its pioneer days. I have yet to find an actual photograph of Charles or Rebecca Brown but hopefully after more research and digging through local historical societies and museums I will find one.

Charles Wilbur Slocum Family at the Slocum House Historical Site in Vancouver, Washington. Charles Wilbur, or C.W., is Rebecca Brown’s brother. I’m not sure which one he is since the people in the picture are not individually labeled. This house still stands only a few blocks from our office.

Edward A. and Sarah Patterson Slocum. Edward is another brother of Rebecca Brown. Edward held several public office positions and was the secretary of the Vancouver Building and Loan Association.
